The Arlberg Ski Region, Austria

The Arlberg Ski Region, Austria

Ski Arlberg Austria picture
Centuries ago, the dairy farmers of the Zurser Valley would climb the surrounding peaks, then slide down the mountain on skis honed from local timber. By the 1930's, the industrious locals had designed Austria's first ski lift, and the ski industry was born. Now the Arlberg region is a mecca for sports enthusiasts and nature lovers in every season.

In this episode Julie & Mark visit the villages of Lech, Zurs and St. Anton. They join the snow safety team as they do morning avalanche control, then take you on a helicopter ski adventure in the surrounding mountains.

They capture the flavor of the old Arlberg on a horse drawn sleigh, cross country ski in the scenic back country, and attempt to descend the mountain on a tiny contraption that barely accommodates a rear end!

TIPS for TRAVELERS to THE ARLBERG, AUSTRIA

The key to the Arlberg: It's made up of three main villages - St. Anton, Zurs & Lech. St. Anton is the biggest, easiest to reach and has the youngest crowd - lots of bars and partying till all hours, meaning pensions right in the pedestrian zone can be noisy.

We stayed in Zurs at the Arlberg House, a great place run by the Eggler family - I highly recommend it! Zurs is a much smaller village, quiet, more expensive hotels.

Lech is the ritziest of the three, nice mixture of lively bars, hotels, shops, mink coats & chic crowd.

Shopping is also very good in Zell am See!
