Guatemala's Dramatic Lake Atitlan Region
Guatemala's Dramatic Lake Atitlan Region
Locals call it one of the seven wonders of the world, surrounded by towering volcanoes, Lake Atitlan provides a stunning backdrop for sailing, horseback riding and paragliding. Mark and Julie gallop through cloud forests and coffee fields for a misty lunch on top of a volcano, and ride out a sudden storm on the lake in a catamaran.
On a trip to the colorful market in "Chichicastenango" Julie gets some Christmas shopping done, and learns the significance of the hand embroidered blouses worn by the tribal women.
This spectacular landscape has attracted an adventurous group of foreigners who make their home in "Panajachel". They'll show Mark & Julie their favorite spots and share their insight on the fascinating indigenous culture. Through this interesting group of "expats" you will experience the lifestyle and culture of central Guatemala.
TIPS for TRAVELERS to GUATEMALA
Lake Atitlan is one of those places a weary traveler can hang out for a month or two - lots of other travelers and expats to socialize with, and plenty to do and see. If you want to treat yourself, stay at the Hotel Atitlan (9) 62-14-16, a beautiful hacienda just outside the town of Panajachel. The hoteli's landscaped grounds and pool overlook the lake and it's surrounding volcanos!
Go for a horseback ride up the volcano with Jim and Nancy in Santiago Atitlan! You will have to do a google search, I can't find their email!
