Connecticut - A Trip Through American History
Connecticut - A Trip Through American History
One of the most populated states in the U.S., a bedroom community of NYC, birthplace of the insurance industry, is that Connecticut? Not if you are seeing it with Passport to Adventure!
Julie & Mark seek out the real Connecticut - cycling through pristine countryside and meeting locals who have roots generations deep. Wherever you go, American history comes alive in Connecticut.
At the Mystic Seaport, our 19th century maritime heritage is re-created in the streets of the village and the historic ships docked in the harbor. In the Long Island Sound, kayakers paddle the Thimble Islands, visitors enjoy traditional "Cape Cod" architecture and fisherman carry on their heritage.
In Hartford, Mark & Julie step into the life of American literary icon, Mark Twain, and in the Quiet Corners theyÕre introduced to little known aspects of the abolition movement.
Canoeing in Huck Finn country, sampling apple cider fresh from an 18th century press, and meeting the pioneers in America's newest wine growing region - that's Connecticut!
TIPS for TRAVELERS to CONNECTICUT
The Northeastern corner of the state - "The Quiet Corner" is quintessential rural East Coast. The Friendship Valley Inn in Brooklyn is a cozy base for exploring the region, and owner Beverly is very helpful and happy to share her extensive knowledge of the area and it's history.
The Vanilla Bean Cafe in Pomfret could easily be a "hang-out" for me - a great place for food, coffees and meeting people. Owners Barry & Brian are also full of local lore.
The Golden Lamb Buttery, Brooklyn - not to be missed for at least one meal, and hopefully Bob and wife "Jimmy" will have a few spare moments to chat - they are a delightful couple with wonderful stories to tell.
Visit Sharpe Hill Vineyards for an introduction to Connecticut wines - you will be impressed!
And, if you admire the hysterical (in my humble opinion), historical figure Mark Twain, you will want to tour his gorgeous home in Hartford, and don't miss the Harriet Beecher Stowe home right next door! If you are caught up in fond memories of Huck & Tom Sawyer, you can make your own river trip - canoe or kayak down the Farmington River with John of Huck Finn Adventures.
