Rajasthan Forts and Palaces
The Forts and Palaces of Rajasthan
India is a land of contrasts and extremes. The desert state of Rajasthan is located in western India on the Pakistan border. This colorful, exotic region is the home of the "Rajputs", warrior clans who ruled this area for over 1000 years.
Julie's journey through Rajasthan begins with a horseback trip in the Aravalli mountains where she rides through the ruins of an ancient hilltop fortress and on country roads past herds of goats and exuberant children.
Rajasthan is also home to some of India's most lavish hotels and romantic cities. In Udaipur Julie visits a Maharana at his palace. They discuss his role in modern Indian society and the legacy of the Rajput families.
She cycles on country roads, then spends the night in an luxurious tented camp set in a Mughal garden, where she is entertained by spellbinding Rajasthani dancers. As they have for centuries, these nomadic people travel the country, performing bewitching traditional dances at family celebrations throughout India.
TIPS for TRAVELERS to RAJASTHAN, INDIA
India stomped on my expectations at every turn, and that's exactly what always happens when you allow yourself to have "expectations"! Go without any preconcieved ideas, and you will learn and enjoy!
Rajasthan is relatively easy on travelers (keeping in mind you ARE in India), especially if you have a good guide and a well planned itinerary.
There is so much to see and experience in India, it's tough to narrow down the choices. For a first trip I recommend starting off with the cities of exotic Rajasthan. Udaipur, with its serene lake and elegant palace hotels is relaxing - a great place to recover from a long flight. In Jaisalmer you will get a taste of the desert, and can venture out on camels! Jodphur has a hilltop fortress and wonderful market - be sure to visit M.V. Spices and take home all you need to make authentic Indian food and flavorful Chai...
My favorite city to hang out in is Udaipur, you can check into one of the many small hotels along the lake, or splurge and spend the night in one of the spectacular local palaces.
The Lake Palace and the Shivniwas Palace are both quite famous, so you will probably need reservations way in advance.
