Discovering the "Sud Tirol", Italy

Discovering the "Sud Tirol", Italy

Dolomite Mountains, Sud-Tirol, Italy
The limestone peaks of the Dolomite mountains make for some of the most dramatic ski terrain in all of Europe. Julie & Mark tour the slopes of the Val Gardena, then board a helicopter to challenge themselves on one of the area's steepest chutes.

Many Sud Tirol families have lived in the once-remote villages for generations, and cherish their way of life. Julie & Mark take a look at the time honored craft of wood carving and spend an afternoon with a local man who offers a touchingly personal perspective of World War One and the transition of the region from Austrian to Italian rule.

This journey through Northern Italy concludes with a quick visit to the renaissance capital of Europe - Florence.

TIPS for TRAVELERS to THE SUD TIROL, ITALY

Each village in Val Gardena (or "Groeden" in German) has two names, one in German and one in Italian.

This can be very confusing, ie: Wolkenstein in German, becomes Selva in Italian and Ortisei in Italian, is called St. Ulrich in German.

Don't worry, all of the road signs feature both names! This area really doesn't feel like Austria or Italy, it has it's own distinct culture.

So, if you are looking for different ski experience, the Val Gardena region is a good choice. The mountains are spectacular, not at all like the Alps, and the skiing is incredibly diverse. It is not as well known as many other areas, so the prices are better and the people are very friendly.

Shopping is also very good in Zell am See!
