Tbilisi and the Caucasus Mountains, Republic of Georgia

From the elegant city of Vienna Austria, we fly into a different world, Tbilisi, capital of the Republic of Georgia, a country still reeling from the breakup of the Soviet Union.

We'll spend a few days touring this historic city and meeting it's kind, generous people, as well as the machine gun toting military that occupy every street corner.

From Tbilisi we'll drive through spectacular countryside and climb into the Caucasus Mountains to the base for our heli-skiing adventure, a modern resort called Gudauri.

From here we'll take off in twin engine soviet military helicopters to land on the awesome peaks that separate Europe from Asia.

Caucasus TRIP TIP

I must admit, this still ranks as one of my favorite trips.

It's definitely not for everyone, but if you are looking for REAL adventure, you'll be closer to it here than anywhere else I have been!

The capital city of Tbilisi, is fascinating; the architecture (what remains), the people, the food, everything is exciting and loaded with history.

The ski resort at Gudauri used to attract wealthy Russians, but now the modern lift network is almost a private ski area for the guests of the Heliski operation, which is run by Swiss and Austrian guides.

You can heliski in the AM, then hit the slopes in the PM after a delicious lunch at the hotel.
