Baja and the Sea of Cortez, Mexico
The lively port of La Paz is a convenient launching point for an aquatic adventure in the Gulf of California and Magdalena Bay on the Pacific side of the Baja peninsula.
In the Sea of Cortez Julie & Mark meet a giant squid, climb strange rock formations and kayak picturesque bays with a local biologist for a guide. Near the Isle of "Espiritu Santo", animals that were once slaughtered for their skins now frolic with visitors. Mark & Julie don snorkel & fins for an underwater ballet with playful sea lions.
Back on terra firma, they hop on mountain bikes to experience the desert and meet some nomadic surf rats on a quest for waves.
The highlight of the trip is a face to face encounter with the magnificent Gray Whales that each year make the migration to Magdalena Bay to give birth. On tiny “ponga” boats Mark & Julie share magical moments with these forty ton mothers and their inquisitive calves.
TIPS for TRAVELERS to BAJA, MEXICOThis is a trip that everyone should do at least once in their life. It is also a great trip to do with older children. The quality of your guides is critical on this trip (or any trip for that matter).
We had a terrific experience with Mar y Aventuras - knowledgeable, fun guides, great food, nice camp sites. Don't wait too long to book, their trips fill up quickly!
Whale watching season is from Dec-Feb. If you are interested in a water-bound adventures in Baja or elsewhere - I can also highly recommend www.OARS.com - awesome rafting trips in the U.S. and exotic locales worldwide. (800) 346-6277 (They work with Mar y Aventuras in Baja)
Wandering around La Paz, buying tacos from the street vendors and enjoying a margarita under the stars makes you feel like you are really on vacation!
We stayed at the Los Arcos Hotel which is modern, clean and comfortable and in a great location to watch sunsets over the bay.
Our guides not only knew where to find the best tacos, but also knew everything about the creatures that inhabit the Baja Peninsula.
Having marine biologists as guides made the trip so much more meaningful.
This is one trip I would definitely not try to do on my own - the guides are worth every penny!
