The Jungles and Rivers of Costa Rica
Costa Rica receives up to 300 inches of rainfall annually, creating lush jungles and raging rivers renowned for white water rafting and kayaking.
Mark and Julie descend the infamous Rio Pacuare in rafts, then hook up with Olympic kayakers as they practice slalom racing on the Reventazon.
At a rain forest reserve they explore the jungle canopy from a network of suspension bridges 350 feet in the air! They also discuss some of the sustainable development projects that have made Costa Rica a global leader in conservation.
A guided tour of the Manuel Antonio preserve offers important lessons in biodiversity and the importance of saving the world's rain forests.
TIPS for TRAVELERS to COSTA RICA
Costa Rica is an good 'beginner' destination for families wanting to try foreign travel. There are now MANY Americans with second homes in Costa Rica, English is spoken most everywhere and the American dollar is widely accepted.
If you have children that like creatures, they will be in heaven here - lots of big, "gross" bugs! (not to mention iguanas, lizards, monkeys, etc.) There is also an active volcano and hot springs for soaking up the view of an eruption!
If you are seasoned travelers, then Costa Rica may be a bit too tame for you, precisely because it is so comfortable for Americans. You can of course always get off the beaten path and find untouristed areas.
It is a terrific destination for those interested in biology, conservation of rainforests, or surfing, but the influence of indigenous cultures is much less pronounces than in other Central & South American destinations. There have been no large archeological sites found in Costa Rica.

Eco Resort of Costa Rica
This tiny country is filled with geographical extremes; and contains some of the greatest biodiversity on earth.
Our base camp is the eco resort called Si Como No, designed to co-exist harmoniously with its jungle habitat.
Monkeys can be spotted in trees, and just a short walk away is the Manuel Antonio Nature reserve.
The entire setting overlooks the blue waters of the Pacific.
We'll hit the ocean for a look at the life of local surfers, and explore the rugged coastline on a fifty-foot sloop.
Climbing into sea kayaks, we'll tour the miles of estuaries that tunnel through the overgrown jungle.
These waterways are home to crocodiles, sloths and monkeys.
Here you'll meet Rafa, a man who has a close rapport with the wildlife, and can summon a dozen monkeys to his side with a single whistle.
A highlight of this episode is a deep sea-fishing trip that turns into a friendly encounter with bottle nose dolphins!
TIPS for TRAVELERS to COSTA RICA
Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica - The base for adventure, fun and comfort here is "Si Como No" Resort.
You can relax around the pool, eat at the swim up bar and watch for monkeys in the trees or let them plan a weeks worth of adventures for you outside the resort.
It's the best of both worlds!
