Lake Lucern & Engelberg, SwitzerlandSome eight hundred years ago, a lone monk and his cow wandered up a fertile valley in the Swiss Alps in search of a sacred spot to build a monastery. Centuries later, the monastery still stands, and Engleberg, or 'Mountain of Angels' towers over one of the most picturesque villages in the Alps.
In this episode Julie & Mark cycle through spring flowers in the valley, then find themselves thigh- deep in powder on one of Europe's longest and most challenging off piste runs.
Just a short drive from Engleberg is Lake Lucerne, and the city that bears its name. We'll take a ferry around the Lake, and explore the historic old town of Lucerne on skates.
TIPS for TRAVELERS to LAKE LUCERN & ENGELBERG, SWITZERLANDThere are smoothly paved walking paths along the lakeshore perfect for inline skating. You can rent skates in the city at several sports shops, but skating out of town means bouncing over a few cobblestone streets before you reach the trail.
The nicest hotel on the lakeshore is the aptly named Palace. It is in a great location and has wonderful lake views.
This obscure little resort - Engelberg, is just now gaining some notoriety. One of the longest off piste runs in Europe, "The Laub", is attracting the attention of the ski world and creating a hip scene in the village.
