The Ziller Valley and Zell am See, AustriaAfter filming Europe's ski resorts for the last ten years, Mark Jennings & Julie Conover share their discovery of two of the lesser known Austrian resorts.
Their journey begins with a visit to the world famous Neuschwanstein castle where they learn the saga of eccentric King Ludwig.
From Bavaria, Julie & Mark travel into the Salzburg region of Austria to Zell Am See, "little village by the lake", to explore the massive Europa Sport Region.
In the Ziller Valley, they ski the Hintertux glacier and launch Julie off the slopes on a paraglider! Then, join a robust group of Austrians for music, schnapps and a hellacious nighttime sledding adventure that leaves Mark with an unwanted souvenir!
Threaded throughout the program is a celebration of the traditional lifestyle with folk music, dance and plenty of local color!
Ziller region | Julie answers QuestionsWe are advanced skiers planning a trip to Austria, the areas are so big, how will we find the best runs? The key to finding the best skiing in Europe is hiring a guide. A local guide will know every nook and cranny of the mountain and where to find the best conditions - they will also keep you safe - i.e.: out of crevasses!
We would like to take our children on a ski vacation. How do the skiing & facilities in Ziller compare to other Austrian areas? The Ziller Valley is probably one of the most family friendly. Many hotels, like the Sport Hotel Theresa, have great programs for children, lots of activities for families AND free daycare!
Is it better to rent a car or take the train to go skiing in Austria? Well, that depends on you! Here are some things to consider: Carrying luggage and ski gear on the trains can be a hassle, but so can fitting it into a tiny car! Car rental is less expensive if you can fly into Germany and pick up the car there. Are you staying in one place for a week, or moving around a lot? Train transfers can be hellish if you are loaded down, so if you plan to bounce around, get a car.

TIPS for TRAVELERS to ZILLERTAL & ZELL am SEEOne of our all time favorite hotels is located in Zell am Ziller - The Sport Hotel Theresa - run by 'mother' Theresa and her warm, hospitable family.
They will feed you gourmet meals (prepared by son Stephan), take you skiing and show you the best spots in the area, and take such good care of you, you will not want to leave - they will make sure you have an unforgettable stay, and you will want to return! We went back three times!
Shopping is also very good in Zell am See! |
